YouTube is finally rolling out picture-in-picture support

YouTube has been playing footsie with picture-in-picture support on iOS for years and, after a long and confusing road, it’s finally rolling out…for some of us.

Today, the company announced that picture-in-picture support is “slowly” rolling out for the YouTube app on the iPhone and iPad. According to the announcement, the feature will be available for all users in the United States, except for music videos. That means that you’ll need a Premium subscription in the United States if you want to use picture-in-picture for music on the app.

Unfortunately, the feature will still be limited to Premium users in all other countries outside of the United States. If you choose to upgrade to YouTube Premium in the United States, you’ll also be able to use picture-in-picture with music.

it’s happening! ✨ picture-in-picture is slowly rolling out for YouTube on iPhone & iPad, & just like on Android, will be avail to:

Premium members globally &
non-Premium members in US (non-music only)

it’s been a long time coming 😌 all the details ➡️ https://t.co/mNbPWWE21n pic.twitter.com/ZeBY48KOhH

Google says that the feature will require an iPhone or iPad running iOS 15 and iPadOS 15 or later. That makes sense as Apple first introduced picture-in-picture support with those versions of its software.

There isn’t a way to manually update to get picture-in-picture support so just keep an eye out as, at some point, it’s just going to start working!
